Foreign Driving Licence and Car Rental in Slovakia: What You Need to Know
An EU driving licence is generally sufficient. For licences issued outside the EU, an International Driving Permit may be required, and the deposit for clients residing outside Slovakia is higher – €1,500 or €3,000 depending on the vehicle class.
Every summer, we hear from clients with a similar question: “I’m arriving on Friday and I have a US driving licence. Is that a problem?”
In most cases, no. However, it is important that we know about your foreign driving licence before you make your reservation. For licences issued outside the EU, an additional document may be required, which needs to be obtained in the country where the original licence was issued.
Here is what you need to know about which documents are required, when an International Driving Permit may be necessary, and what to expect when renting a car in Slovakia.
Driving licences from the EU and other European countries
Driving licences issued in European Union member states are valid in Slovakia without the need for a translation or an International Driving Permit. The same generally applies to driving licences issued in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
However, you still need to meet the standard rental requirements regarding age, driving licence category and how long you have held your licence. For premium vehicles, for example, the minimum age may be 25 and a Category B driving licence may need to have been held for at least two years.
In addition to your driving licence, you will need a valid identity document, usually an ID card or passport. If you complete online identity verification before your rental, you will use the same documents when collecting the vehicle.
Driving licences issued outside the EU
For driving licences issued outside the EU, the requirements depend on the country of issue, the format of the licence and the applicable international rules.
If the information on the licence is sufficiently clear and the licence meets the requirements for recognition in Slovakia, an International Driving Permit may not be required. In other cases, for example if the information is not sufficiently clear or the licence does not meet the requirements for recognition, an International Driving Permit may also be required.
An International Driving Permit is not a replacement for your original driving licence or simply a translation. It is a separate document issued in the country where your original driving licence was issued.
The easiest solution? Send us a photo of your driving licence before making your reservation. We can check whether the document is sufficient for the rental or whether we recommend obtaining an International Driving Permit as well.
This helps you avoid finding out at the vehicle collection that an additional document is required.
What if you live in Slovakia for a longer period?
Different rules may apply to long-term residents of Slovakia than to short-term visitors. A driving licence issued in a third country may not remain sufficient after a certain period, and you may need to arrange its exchange or another form of recognition.
This is a matter of road traffic and residency regulations rather than the rental company’s conditions. If you are unsure about your situation, we recommend checking the applicable requirements before booking a vehicle.
Why is the deposit higher for international clients?
For clients residing outside Slovakia, the deposit depends on the vehicle class:
- Premium – €1,500
- Luxury – €3,000
This is not an additional rental fee or a surcharge simply because you are an international client. The deposit serves as security for potential obligations arising from the rental, such as fines received after the rental, damage or other unpaid costs.
For a client residing in Slovakia, any subsequent matters are generally easier to resolve. For a client who leaves the country or continent after the rental, dealing with outstanding obligations can be more administratively and legally complicated. The deposit therefore also reflects the practical aspects of resolving any outstanding obligations after the rental.
The deposit is, of course, refundable
Once the rental has ended and any outstanding costs have been settled, the deposit is returned to the client.
For international bank transfers, it is worth allowing sufficient time for the payment to be processed. If you are collecting the vehicle shortly after arriving in Slovakia, we recommend arranging both the rental payment and deposit well in advance.
What should you bring when collecting the vehicle?
The list is simple:
- valid driving licence,
- International Driving Permit, if required,
- valid identity document.
If the reservation and deposit have already been arranged in advance, the actual vehicle collection can be very straightforward.
Arriving by plane? Send us your flight number as well. If your flight is delayed, we can check the updated arrival time and adjust the vehicle delivery accordingly. We can also arrange vehicle delivery directly to the airport.
Example: a client from Canada
Imagine a client from Canada arriving in Vienna on Friday at 14:40. They need a seven-seat SUV for ten days and plan to travel through Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria.
The driving licence contains information in Latin script. We received a photo of the licence before the reservation, allowing us to confirm in advance that the document was sufficient for the rental.
For a Luxury-class vehicle, the deposit was €3,000, and the rental fee was paid in advance. The client completed the online identity verification before departure.
The vehicle was already waiting at Vienna Airport. After checking the documents, signing the required paperwork and handing over the vehicle, the client could continue their journey.
If international travel is agreed in advance, crossing borders does not necessarily create any additional complications.
What about international business clients?
If a company renting the vehicle is based in another EU member state, the invoice may be issued under the reverse-charge mechanism. In this case, we need a valid VAT ID number, which we will verify.
The driver, however, remains the individual person using the vehicle and must meet the rental requirements and complete the required document verification like any other driver.
A foreign driving licence does not have to be a problem
If you are travelling to Slovakia from abroad, renting a car does not have to be complicated. The most important thing is not to leave the document check until the day you collect the vehicle.
Send us your driving licence in advance and we will check whether it is sufficient for the rental and whether you need any additional documentation.
One email in advance can save you unnecessary complications on the day you arrive.
