When a five-seat SUV is enough and when you really need seven seats

When a five-seat SUV is enough and when you really need seven seats

Luggage decides, not the number of people. Five travellers with suitcases for a week are a bigger problem than seven on a day trip — and the third row eats almost the entire boot. Here is how to choose.

People choose a car based on the number of seats and then discover while packing that they were asking the wrong question.

The right question is: How much luggage do we have, and how long will we be on the road?

Seven seats are not the same as seven seats with luggage.

What the third row really means

In a seven-seat SUV, the third row is usually foldable. Once you put it up, part of the space that would otherwise be available for luggage is taken up by the seats.

The result? A car advertised as having “seven seats” can effectively have two very different configurations: five seats with a large luggage area, or seven seats with significantly less luggage space.

Exactly how much luggage you can fit depends on the specific model. In some vehicles, there may only be room for a few smaller bags behind the third row, while others offer more usable space.

That is not a criticism of the engineers. It is simply physics — the vehicle has a certain length, and the third row has to fit somewhere.

The important thing is to know this before you book the car, not half an hour before departure while standing in your garage.

When are five seats enough?

When you are travelling with two to four people, a five-seat SUV is usually more than enough — even for a longer trip.

You have a large luggage compartment, a comfortable second row and no need to compromise between passenger space and luggage capacity.

Typical situations where a five-seat SUV is often the better choice include:

  • two adults and two children going on a two-week holiday,
  • four people going skiing,
  • a family travelling with a stroller and other children’s equipment,
  • two adults travelling with a dog,
  • a long road trip where everyone is bringing their own luggage.

If there are four of you and you have a lot of luggage, you simply do not need the third row. You will appreciate the extra space behind the second row much more.

When do you really need seven seats?

Seven seats start to make sense when you are travelling with more than four people and do not need a large luggage compartment.

For example:

  • taking six people to the airport with cabin luggage,
  • a wedding where the car is transporting several guests over a short distance,
  • a company team travelling to a trade fair with laptops and a small amount of equipment,
  • a day trip without a large amount of luggage.

In these situations, the third row is exactly what you need.

When you have three children, the situation changes

For a family with three children, it is not just about the number of seats. It is also about where the child seats can be installed.

Three child seats may not fit comfortably or practically next to each other in the second row of a particular vehicle. In that case, the third row can be a practical solution for one of the children.

Suddenly, seven seats are not a luxury but a matter of practicality.

However, you also need to consider that using the third row reduces the available luggage space. For a family holiday, this may mean using an additional solution such as a roof box.

The third option people often forget: a pickup

Sometimes the answer is neither a five-seat nor a seven-seat SUV.

If you need to transport five people and a large amount of bulky luggage or equipment, a pickup may make more sense.

A Dodge Ram has five seats in the cabin and a cargo bed that can carry things that would be difficult to fit into a conventional SUV — bicycles, camping equipment, larger pieces of luggage or work equipment.

For five people travelling with a lot of bulky items, a pickup can therefore be a more practical solution than a seven-seat SUV with the third row in use.

There is one important limitation: the cargo bed is not a lockable luggage compartment.

For a trip across Europe with expensive equipment, it may therefore not be the ideal solution. For a weekend at a holiday house, camping trip or transporting bulky equipment, however, it can be exactly the vehicle you need.

Two trips, two completely different choices

First situation: five adults travelling to Vienna for a long weekend. Everyone has a small suitcase.

A seven-seat SUV can be an ideal choice. You can use the third row, everyone travels in one vehicle and the luggage can be arranged according to the specific model.

Second situation: two adults and three children travelling to the seaside for a week. Two large suitcases, two backpacks, a bag of toys and beach equipment.

Here, a seven-seat SUV may be necessary because of the passenger and child-seat configuration, but luggage space can become an issue.

A roof box, if available for the particular vehicle, may be the solution, along with arranging the luggage differently depending on the vehicle.

And this is exactly why simply saying “we need seven seats” is not enough.

How to choose the right car before booking

When choosing a rental car, do not look only at the number of seats.

Consider four things:

How many people are travelling?

How much luggage are you bringing?

How long will you be on the road?

Do you need child seats or any additional equipment?

The easiest option is to send us one sentence:

“We are five people travelling for seven days, with two large suitcases and skis.”

Based on that information, we can recommend a specific vehicle from our fleet and tell you whether a roof box or other equipment would be suitable.

It is faster than studying specifications and, more importantly, it helps avoid an unpleasant surprise when it is time to pack.

Because the right car is not the one with the most seats on paper. It is the one that comfortably fits everyone — and everything they need to bring with them.
